Stonewall has launched a new campaign reassuring lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) school pupils that they don’t have to wait for things to get better in their lives – they can be great today. Politicians in Westminster and Cardiff Bay are committed to tackling homophobic bullying and many schools, supported by Stonewall’s Education for All campaign, are taking bold steps to do just that.
The video campaign is in response to a similar US campaign featuring people from school teachers to President Barack Obama telling lesbian, gay and bisexual young people that things will get better. In September 2010, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry Miller to inspire hope for young people facing harassment. In response to a number of students taking their own lives after being bullied in school, they wanted to create a personal way for supporters everywhere to tell LGBT youth that, yes, it does indeed get better and that they are not alone. The project has become a worldwide movement, inspiring more than 40,000 user-created videos viewed more than 40 million times.
Both campaigns offer young LGBT people the opportunity to see how love and happiness can be a reality, where straight allies can visit and support their friends and family members and where people can share their stories, and watch videos of love and support.
